Long Bows and Short Knights

Comparison of Medieval Miniature Rules

Other Medieval Rule Sets

Available in stores, online, via mail order, and in convention flea markets.

Knight Hack ($20): One of the "Hack" series created by Phil Viverito, Knight Hack is about the same medium complexity as MW and DoB. There's more of a unit difference than the other two, as big knight units tend to have a high morale and need to be pounded into oblivion. Less restrictive command and control.

DBA ($8) and DBM ($15): Phil Barker's very popular sets for everything from ancients to medievals. Rather generic and the command and control rules are more dependent on luck than any other set. DBA is still fast and fun and perfect for a 1/2 hour game. DBM adds a bit more chrome and nuances. The rules are poorly written for such a simple set, but you can quickly pick up the flow at any convention.

WRG 7.6 ($12): Phil Barker's complex set of rules for ancients through medieval. Still one of the most argued about set of rules due to poor rules writing, but also the most played. A classic, even if difficult to learn.

Tactica Medieval ($20): Arty Conliffe's sequel to the successful Tactica Ancients—just not as popular. Played once. Not impressed at all. HOWEVER, the skirmish-level 1:1 SIEGE game rules are brilliant and we've played all sorts of sieges multiple times.

Armati ($18): Arty Conliffe. Haven't played it.

Flowers of Chivalry ($16):Canadian Wargames Group. Haven't played it.

A Few Good Men ($12): Gauntlet Publications. Haven't played it.
