Game Scenario

by Greg Pitts

MACEDONIANS: Army Commander - Alexander, "Superior." Attached directly to the Alexander figure are six castings of Companion cavalry. These are his bodyguard and travel with Alexander wherever he goes. This bodyguard does not have to activate orders but follows Alexander wherever he goes. If Alexander attaches himself to any Tactical unit, the bodyguard does likewise, becoming an integral part of the Tactical unit they are attached to for all purposes, including morale.

Major Unit #1: One Tactical unit of Greek Mercenary unarmored cavalry at eight figures. Two squadrons of Prodromoi cavalry, each at four figures. One Major Unit commander.

Major Unit #2: One Tactical unit of Cretan archers at eight figures, one Tactical unit of Persian slingers at eight figures, two Tactical units of Agrianian javelinmen at eight figures each. Three Tactical units of Companion Cavalry at eight figures each. One Major Unit commander (Balcrus: "Good").

Major Unit #3: Two Tactical units of Persian unarmored cavalry armed with lance (battle status) at eight figures each. Two Tactical units of Persian light cavalry armed with javelins, each at eight figures. One Major unit commander. Alexander is attached at Major unit level at battle's start.

Major Unit #1 deploys initially anywhere in the designated onboard area for the Macedonians. These troops are operating under an "Attack" order that is already activated.

Major Units #2 and #3 arrive in the Maneuver Movement Phase of the first Hourly Round and are operating under an Attack order. These troops are subject to all rules for off board troops entering the battle area.Tactical Unit Specifications for the Macedonian army are the same as outlined in the Alexander module, 3.63, 3.72-3, 3.77, 6.46, 6.51, 8.2 and 8.21.

SCYTHIANS: Army Commander - Carthasis ("Good")

Major Unit #1:: Four Tactical units of Scythian "Horse Archers" at eight figures each. One Major Unit commander.

Major Unit #2: Five Tactical units of Scythian "Horse Archers' at eight figures each. One Major Unit commander (Satraces).

Major Unit #3: Two Tactical Units of Scythian "Cataphracts" at eight figures each. One Major Unit commander.

All Scythian troops must initially deploy on board in the designated Scythian deployment area. The Scythian player is free to issue any allowable order to each of his three Major Units and will activate them in normal fashion on game turn one.

OFF BOARD MOVEMENT

Only the Scythians can use off board movement as described in Ancient Empires, Chapter XIX. The Scythian commander may utilize all off board zones as if he had a 2:1 scouting superiority. No hidden units are allowed but all other rules governing off board movement and pursuit shall apply.

VICTORY CONDITIONS:

Alexander had the burden of attack in this engagement while his Scythian adversaries simply needed to inflict casualties while avoiding them themselves.

SCYTHIAN VICTORY:

1.The Scythians win a strategic victory if they inflict at least 30percent casualties on the Macedonians and suffer no more than 10 percent casualties themselves.

2.A tactical victory is won if the Scythian inflicts at least 20 percent casualties on the Macedonians while suffering no more than 20 percent casualties themselves.

3.A marginal victory is obtained if the Scythian inflicts more casualties than he receives and he does not suffer more than 25 percent casualties himself.

MACEDONIAN VICTORY:

1.The Macedonian wins a strategic victory if he inflicts 40 percent casualties on the Scythians while suffering no more than 10 percent himself.

2. A Tactical victory is won by inflicting at least 30 percent casualties on the Scythians while suffering no more than 20 percent casualties himself.

3. A marginal victory is obtained by inflicting more casualties than received while suffering no more than 25 percent casualties himself.

For the purpose of victory conditions the following will all count as "casualties":

    1. All missile and melee figure losses, including any units that have "routed."
    2. Units in "broken" status that have not rallied at the battle's conclusion.
    3. Units that have "evaded" off the playing area and have not yet returned onto the battle area.
    4. Units that have effectively "removed themselves" from the battle by one having evaded off board and the other pursuing off board. This does not include pursuing troops that have dispatched their target and have simply not returned to on board play. See rule 11.9, Pursuing Troops From the Field of Battle. (Ancient Empires Addendum in the Successors module).

BATTLE LENGTH:: 10 Hourly Rounds maximum. If at any point, either side has all of their Tactical Units leave the battle board for any reason, the battle is ended and casualties are totaled and victory status' determined. It is recommended that this battle be fought on a playing area six feet wide by eight feet deep.
