According to William Rodgers' Greek and Roman Naval Warfare, the Roman quinquereme had a ship's compliment of 250 men: 150 rowers, 75 soldiers, and 25 sailors. The full speed of the vessel under oars was approximately 6.5 knots, and under sail the ship could make 9 knots. The corvus was fitted on the bow as shown. The gangway, four feet wide and eighteen feet long, was controlled by two men on either side.
