Game Store Profile: War Dogs

by Jon Compton

THE PERFECT GAME STORE

It is refreshing to find a hobby store that clearly understands its role in the great cosmos. Such a store is War Dogs in Jacksonville, FL. There is no equivocation in this store. The folks who run this store know exactly what they want out of life.

The store is run by Joe and Rich (anybody with a milk bar code tattooed on his arm can't be all bad), and they make a dynamite team. Joe is an expert in miniature and historical games, and Rich is a nationally ranked Magic player with extensive experience in role-playing. Both have been in the retail sales end of the gaming industry for many years and have accumulated a wealth of knowledge on the various facets of the hobby industry. Wanna know the latest trend in roleplaying marketing? Rich will know. Wanna know how many men in a Roman Legion? Joe will know.

Together these two have stocked the store with the latest, greatest, and best in miniatures, wargames, role-playing, fantasy, and card game products. They have also stocked the nooks and crannies of the store with a nice array of arcane items and objects that make browsing fun and interesting. Back issues of S & T with games are tucked on the shelves, along with books on Custer and the Cossacks. In addition, there is a wide array of discounted and used products, including wargames, books, magazines, miniatures, and computer games. There is also plenty of room for gaming.

The back room of the store, which is almost as large as the store itself, is open for gaming of all types, and the 18 large tables are usually packed with gamers of all shapes and sizes.

The store is open from 11 to 9, seven days a week, but Joe and Rich will keep the store open late to allow a game of something or other to finish (they are usually playing in the game, so it makes the decision less of a problem). The store welcomes the many military personnel in the area, and they keep the atmosphere clean, neat, and friendly so that young and new players will feel at home. The pair are always willing to answer questions, play a game with a novice, or talk to a parent about the unusual hobby their child has "gotten into."

Anyone who wants to see how the perfect gaming hobby shop should be run need only stop by. You can't miss it: it's got a huge bulldog wearing a helmet with the words "War Dogs" painted across the front window.

Customer Service can be reached by calling (904) 399-1975. They'll do mail orders, special orders, answer your questions, give you tips or how to play better, and (if you're bold enough to challenge them) trounce you in the game of your choice.
