German Situation
by LTC John Gordon
It is 15 November, 1944. Your unit is the 1st Battalion, 110th Panzergrenadier Regiment of the 25th Panzergrenadier Division. In late October your division, which was already understrength, was redeployed from Russia to the Western Front. For the past three weeks the division has been engaged in intense fighting against the U.S. Third Army. The Americans are trying to reach the German border, which is about 10 miles to the east of your present positions. Your battalion is greviously understrength. You have done the best you can to reorganize the unit, and prepare for the next American attack. For the past two days the enemy has been elements of the U.S. 4th Armored Division. They are a very good unit. Adding to your problems has been total American domination of the air. The Regimental commander has given you the mission of defending two key villages, Danville and Rambouillet. There are indications that the Americans are planning a major attack on the area. Recognizing that your battalion is weak, the Regimental commander has provided reinforcements to help you defend the area. Mission: You are to hold the two villages. Organization: Your battered battalion has been reorganized into two Kampfgruppe, a recon element, and a reserve. Each of the Kampfgruppe in the villages has the following elements:
4 Rifle Squads--NCO w/SMG, 2 EM w/MP44 AR, 3 riflemen (one has panzerfaust), 1 LMG team (2 men) 1 Heavy Weapons Squad-NCO w/SMG, MMG team (3 men), 1 Panzerschreck team (two men, 8 rounds) 1 Anti-tank Gun: PAK 40 75 mm gun, with 10 AP, 10 HE rounds, 6 man crew (NCO w/SMG, 5 riflemen) Flak Detachment from Division:
