General Situation
The following scenario is based on the preceding article from Small Unit Actions, a study produced by the Historical Division of the War Department as part of the American Forces in Action Series published during and just after the war. For the background to the battle and a review of the actual fight, please refer to the article on the 27th Division on Saipan in this magazine. This scenario is an attempt to recreate just one small piece of the battle--an attack by a single company on strong Japanese positions. This action is typical of the fighting on Pacific Islands-- complicated by, the nature of the terrain and the difficulty of communications.
