Order of Battle
By Keith Frye
The troops were drawn up defensively, mainly on the far bank of the River Unstruth, with the fourth brigade forming the left wing, the first and second brigade forming the centre, and the third brigade forming the right wing. The recruits were sent to the rear, behind the village of Merxleben, probably to guard the trains, after about 1000 were employed preparing defensive works. The cavalry formed the reserve. There was a small outpost maintained at Henningsleben, but the soldiers failed to occupy a small wood and bathing establishment on the banks of the Salza. This was to cost their artillery some casualties, later on. Prussian Order of Battle
