Wargame Notes

Scenario researched by Clay Cooper

Table size is 4x6 feet for Johnny Reb II, 15mm scale. Adjust as needed for other ground scales or rules sets.

The scenario will begin with the 3:00 P.M. game turn and ends at 7:00 P.M.

DEPLOYMENT

The initial dispositions, arrivals, and set-up restrictions are as follows:

Kimball's and Sullivan's Union brigades begin the game deployed anywhere within areas D6, D7, E7, and/or E8. Colonel Ashby and his CSA command begin the game deployed in areas F7, F8, and/or F9. The batteries of Kimball's Brigade may begin the game deployed (unlimbered) on Pritchard's Hill.

3:00 PM - The Confederate brigades of Burk, Fulkerson, and Garnett along with Stonewall Jackson enter the southern edge of the map on the Valley Turnpike in column formation.

RESTRICTION - the units of Burks' Brigade may never move further north than row E of the terrain map.

4:00 PM - Tyler's Federal brigade enters the northern map edge on the Middle Road in column formation.

TERRAIN

Hogg Run and the streams are fordable at any point along their course.

  • All woods near Kernstown were medium in density. Woods serve as cover for morale and rally die rolls.
  • All other terrain is considered as open except for the town designated on the battle map, which is broken terrain and will disorder formed troops.
  • Subtract 1" of movement for each stream or stonewall that a unit crosses in open terrain.
  • Each normal hill slope line requires a +1" movement penalty to ascend for any unit.

VICTORY CONDITIONS

The side with the most victory points (VP) at the end of the game is the victor. Victory points are awarded according to the following schedule:

1 VP for every 2 enerny figures that are casualties or lost
3 VP for every Confederate cavalry figure casualty
1 VP for every enemy gun captured or destroyed
2 VP for every enemy brigade leader wounded or killed
5 VP for CSA players if Col. Kimball is severely wounded or killed
20 VP for Union if Jackson is severely wounded or killed
20 VP for the side (if any) in undisputed control of Pritchard's Hill at the end of the game
10 VP for each CSA unit that exits off the map from areas A5 or A6 at any time during the game. They may not return. Note the movement restriction on Burks' Brigade.
