Skirmish Wargaming

Miniature Warfare Game Review

by Don Lowry

Donald Featherstone, well-known editor of WARGAMER'S NEWSLETTER and author of numerous books on wargaming with miniatures, has written this 6 1/2" x 9 1/2". 100-page hardbound book, published by Patrick Stephens Ltd in England. These rules are for simulating very small battles where each figure represents a single individual, with personal characteristics and abilities - even a name.

The general rules cover about 6 pages. The rest of the book comprises chapters listing characters, situations, weapons capabilities and any special rules for the following: The Vikings, 850 AD; English archers in France, June 1429; English Civil War cavalry action, 1643; The Jolly Roger, 1715; The 95th Rifles in the Peninsula, 1813; The French Foreign Legion in Mexico 1866; The Massacre at Isandhlwana, 1879; The Old 'West, 1888; First World War trenc raid, 1916; and Street fighting in Cassino, 1944.

Movement and other actions are simultaneous, via pre-written intentions. One "phase" represents approximately 5 seconds, and the ground scale is 1 cm = 1 pace. Figures could be any scale from 20mm to 54mm. You'll need two 20 sided dice to use these rules (see below). A very interesting and unique diversion from more conventional forms of wargaming. This book sells for $9.95 and is available from Sky Books/Bill Dean Books.
