Over the past few months I have endeavored to cast more light on some of the various smaller companies within the Hobby. This article culminates my first efforts in this regard, In some ways I finish with a whimper as this article is no where in the depth that I would have liked, but then it would have to be book length! Britain appears to have many more "small efforts" than Australia and Canada at present. I hope, in this article, to give a fairly indepth view of one of the major influences on the Hobby, Wargame Research Group, some comments on their game Seastrike, plus some passing comments from and on wargamers, companies, and magazines in Europe, There should be enough information within this article for any of its readers to pursue any thoughts or desires that they may wish to fulfill, In my "Pilgrimage to the Cathedrals of Wargaming" one SPI person pointed out that a game on India, or the Sudan would not sell as it is not'Western European history. Marc Miller made the same point by talking about Blacks and a Watts game or Chicano's and an Alamo game. Yet the ability of wargamers to explore a little further in the Hobby is wanting. The willingness to spend $8 to $15 on a new product from a new company is very limited. Too limited I think. I think that it is a case of falling into a rut. A cultural jump is one thing but a company or a boundry jump is another. To illustrate this point further, a close wargaming friend of mine of many years (in the Hobby that is) recently played his first naval game. Enjoyed it too! Granted there are too many games out there to learn well, but a true Renaissance Person, I would think, would experiment from time to time.
