Anzio's Heirs
Three New WarGames

Introduction

By Chuck Holland

THE INVASION OF SICILY published by PANZERFAUST magazine and Guidon Games, SELERNO by THE BATTLE FLAG and ANZIO BEACHHEAD by STRATEGY and TACTICS magazine and SIMULATIONS PUBLICATIONS, make up a trio of survivors to the demise of Avalon Hill's ANZIO. They maintain the Italian theater in the rolls of currently available game subjects and demonstrate the presence of three alternate publishing companies in this decade of vast conflict-game advances. The abounding number of titles we are presently experiencing allows this three-way comparison of otherwise separate but similar simulations.

These three games, while portraying different battles, have plenty in common. All deal with the Italian theater of World War II. All are invasion games involving an allied landing on Axis held ground. The grand-tactical scale is used in all three games, with regimental and battalion size units. All have similar mapboard, movement and combat resolution systems. Victory, in all three, weighs geographical objectives and casualties on a point scale. All of these games were originally magazine games, having been at one time published as part of a regular issue of a conflict game periodical.

Besides contextual comparisons, these games serve to illustrate the styles and quality representative of three different game designing and publishing organizations. With the passing of ANZIO, preservation of this historical era in games will depend on its heirs. SPI, GUIDON, and THIRD MILLENIA have all risen to the occasion and merit consideration.
