The Defenders (and British OOB)

The DefendersWellesley expected Junot to approach Vimeiro along the Torres Vedras road and to march directly upon the Valongo ridge. Sir Arthur Wellesley directing the battle from the windmill on top of the Valongo ridge. Consequently he placed the brigades of Hill, Crawfurd, Nightingale and Ferguson in a line along the crest of the ridge. Vimeiro Hill was defended by Fane's Brigade with its right flank resting upon the Maceira, and next to Fane was Anstruther with his left wing almost touching the base of the Mariano Ridge. There were also two brigades of artillery twelve guns - on the hill. In front of the hill was a pine wood in which Fane had placed 200 of his Riflemen. There was only one battalion stationed on the Mariano heights, this was the 40th Regiment, with the Portuguese infantry in reserve behind the 40th. The allied cavalry was in the flat land between Vimeiro Hill and the Mariano ridge, near the baggage park.
