Ace, 1989, ISBN 0-441-12389-9, $5.99, 267 pages Well, well, well. Germanicus certainly stepped in it this time! In his haste to start the process of bringing back the republic after 2000 years of Imperial rule, he invokes a civil war and finds himself sneaking through the sewers trying not to get skewered.
So, it's off to the provinces to try and regroup, get troops, and retake Rome from the clutches of a degenerate usurper...who casts Germanicus as a tyrannical despot. And as for faithful Rolf, he exits stage left to go back to his barbarian German tribe to stir things up. Will Rome ever be the same?
If you've read the first two books, there's no stopping you from reading the third, nor should you be stopped, for Mitchell has written another sensational story. Sadly, there does not seem to be a fourth book in the series.
