SGS Officer Reports

Happy Thirtieth!

Because 30 years ago Mark Swanson, Kevin Slimak, Rodman Burr, and I founded the American Wargaming Association, which after a merger and change in names became today's Strategy Gaming Society.

Election

We have an Election for Regional Director of Region 10-New England. The only candidate is Peter DeRosa, who has agreed to run. The ballot is on the next-to-last page.

Proposed Constitutional Amendment

Jeff Tibbetts has proposed a Constitutional Amendments. The following is a replacement for the current II.D and II.E on duties of the Treasurer and Membership Secretary:

“II. Officers
D. The duties of the Treasurer shall be:
2. to maintain the financial records of the SGS.
5. to furnish the other officers with necessary information on the finances of the SGS.

E. The duties of the Membership Secretary shall be:
1. to maintain the membership records of the SGS and to receive new members into the SGS.
2. to furnish the other officers with necessary information on the membership of the SGS”

Under the Constitution and By-Laws, the next step is the test for support. If you wish to support this proposed Constitutional Amendment, send your letter of support to the Editor, George Phillies, 87-6 Park Avenue, Worcester MA 01605. If there is adequate support, we go to the next step. See the Bylaws IV-A-1 for more details. As Treasurer, I find that 5% of the membership is 6 members.

For those of you who find Constitutional Amendments unfamiliar, I think we have reached this stage this four times in 30 years.

President's Report

The Strategy Gaming Society is the best kept secret in hobby. And that has to change.

Bids for the current items are as follows (detailed descriptions were in the previous issue):

Wooden Ships and Iron Men (Avalon Hill Computer Game, donated by Sam Thornton)-ten dollars.
Wavell's 30,000 (Critical Hit expansion for Advanced Tobruk Board Wargame, donated by George Phillies)-five dollars
Line of Fire (BSO Games Board Wargame, donated by George Phillies)-five dollars

Fair Warning: If these prices hold through the next issue of Strategist, these items will be sold. Send your bids to me at 896 West San Fernando Street, San Jose, CA 95126.

To date, I have not received any recruitments for the contest announced last issue. The grand prize for the most recruitments (five or more) brought in by December 31 of this year will be mint copies of the GMT Games Air Bridge to Victory (Operation Market Garden, Holland, 1944), Silver Bayonet (Vietnam 1965), and Lost Victory (WW2 Eastern Front, 1943). In addition, everyone who brings in at least five recruitments will receive a mint copy of the XTR Game Smithereens (last six months of WW2 in Europe). Additional prizes may be added as I wheel and deal. All of these prizes will be awarded.

But you must recruit at least five new members to qualify, so spread the word. I honestly hope that I will have to hand out 100 prizes.

As always, if there is any matter that you feel needs to be brought to the attention of the President, please do not hesitate to contact me.

We had the very positive suggestion that we should run the list of discounters more often. How often would you all like? I could certainly do it every month, which was the original proposal, but space in Strategist is fixed. More lists mean fewer articles. I could put it in the indicia (page 2, top) and rotate it against the back issues and other reports. What do you all want me to do?

Also, at some point in the past we gained a discount from R&C Games. I have been asked for contact data, but do not have any. Does anyone else know? The name must have come from someplace.

Finally, I have on my desk the full set of back issues that John Kula edited. It would be highly advantageous if someone in the society who had Optical Character Recognition software were prepared to convert these into text files. Are there any takers?

Treasurer's Report

At the end of July, we had 110 members. After a period of limited renewals, almost every current member is now renewing. In the past month, we had renewals for Jones, Dapkus, Goudy, Graham, Young, orders for two dozen back issues, and a new member: Darin Leviloff. We have just over $3700 in the bank account and checks in hand that came in this week. For the May, June, and July Strategists and Directorate Newsletters, I am owed $382.73. I can safely state that our financial condition is entirely sound.

If other officers have had appropriated or Constitutionally authorized expenditures, please do let me know.
