Talisman

Reprint

by Nick Goedert

A couple people in this thread have mentioned that they would buy a reprint of the 2nd edition but not the third. I'm curious as to why.

I have both editions, and some but not all of the expansions for each. I have played both a few times. I remember both being very long and very random, but OK for some mindless fantasy fun.

As far as I can tell, the advantages of the 2nd edition are:

  • Some people prefer the artwork
  • Has more wild and totally unbalanced characters
  • Has more "interesting" expansions (that seem poorly play tested)
  • Fetched very high resale prices

Since this is a reprint sans expansion, it seems like only the artwork would make a difference here.

The advantages for the 3rd edition are:

  • More balanced characters and decks
  • Much better quality cards and plastic components (nice plastic miniatures for the characters rather than flimsy card stand-ups)
  • I'm pretty sure the basic 3rd edition game includes more cards than the basic 2nd edition game, including some from the first 2nd ed. expansion.
  • I think there was some sort of experience system that wasn't in the 2nd ed.

Is there an advantage to the 2nd edition game play that I am missing, or is it simply the art that make people want a reprint of the 2nd edition?
