New Magazine

Your Editor keeps receiving items that fit poorly in Strategist: Complete games like Firstest with the Mostest and Fall of Manjukuo II, rules sets,... all too large to fit well. One option is “American Wargamer” a perhaps-quarterly extra magazine of large bonus items, roughly ‘a game or the like in every issue’ for about $5 an issue plus foreign postage, perhaps more for back issue sales. What do you think?

Old Business

2003-1) Be it resolved, that the SGS will actively join in the effort to assure space for the play of wargames at the annual Origins convention;

Vote: YES: Tibbetts, Phillies, Minton, Kramer MOTION PASSES 4-0

2003-2) Be it resolved, that the SGS will create a committee to oversee the SGS's sponsorship of a wargame competition to be held at the annual Origins convention, said competition to have appropriate recognition of achievement SGS's sponsorship of a wargame competition to be held at the annual Origins convention, said competition to have appropriate recognition of achievement for its competitors [i.e., prizes];

VOTE: YES: Tibbetts, Phillies, Minton PRESENT—Kramer MOTION PASSES 3-0 Kramer writes: I believe that a new COmmittee is not called for but that these duties should be parceled out among the various existing committees (Boardgaming, Awards, and the like).

2003-3) be it resolved that the SGS will undertake to establish a presence on Consimworld as a means of communication both with its members around the world as well as a significant and inexpensive manner in which to make its presence known to the 14,500+ subscribers to Consimworld, most of who have never heard of the SGS.

VOTE: YES: Tibbetts, Phillies. Minton, Kramer MOTION PASSES 4-0

Jeff Tibbetts now reports that this has already been done, but that the location’s attachment to the SGS has suffered with time and needs reinforcements.

2003-4) be it resolved that all Directors and Officers of the SGS are ex-officio members of all committees.

VOTE: YES: Tibbetts, Phillies PRESENT: Minton, Kramer MOTION PASSES 2-0

Minton writes: I'm fully in favor of this goal. I would also like to make sure that the SGS focuses on all strategy games and does not only focus on the subgroup of wargames. However, that is just a comment - not to detract in any way from Jeff's motions.

Kramer writes: I would like to see an argument for or against this motion before taking a position.

New Business

2003-5 (from Kramer) Be It Resolved that the text of II.M of the By-Laws be amended to include the following “5. the Awards presented by the SGS shall be known as the “Gamer’s Choice Awards’.”

Kramer: There seems to be a bit of confusion over this name. I believe that the name Gamers Choice Awards has been inextricably wed to the Strategy Gaming Society. To think otherwise is to admit that the SGS has been lending its name and reputation to a private vanity project that can be picked up and toted away on one individual’s whims. If the former Awards Committee Chairman wishes to set up his own award program free of oversight by the SGS Directorate he is free to do so and has my blessing. But he cannot use the name of the Society’s Award Program. He must find another name for his new project. We have a new Awards Committee Chairman and financial issues are to be resolved in the forthcoming budget. The Society has not abandoned the Gamer’s Choice Awards and thus they are not free to be used by another entity. To allow this hijack of the Society’s Award program is unacceptable and I strongly urge all Directors to vote “YES” on the above proposal.

The Vice President interprets the above sentence as as request for an immediate vote, and an immediate vote is therefore called.

2003-6(from Phillies) To create an additional society publication “American Wargamer”. The purpose of American Wargamer is to publish complete games, rules sets, and other materials that are too large to be included in Strategist. American Wargamer will be published on occasion when the Editor wills. Subscriptions will be $5 per issue, plus an amount to be announced to cover foreign postage. The Editor will announce future issues and estimated pages counts in advance, so that potential subscribers can choose intelligently whether or not to subscribe. The Editor may not spend from Society funds in excess of subscription income to pay for publishing American Wargamer, but may out of his own funds support publication at his own risk in anticipation of future income.

Phillies: I am piling up large potential publications that I believe our members would enjoy reading, but there is not way we can accommodate them in Strategist without reducing its value to people not interested in the publication at hand. I therefore propose that we do an occasional extra object to accommodate complete games, complete rules sets, Pimper’s Volume 5, etc.

This is a proposal for discussion. The vote is called for the next issue.

2003-7 A Dues rate for electronic distribution of Strategist shall be established. Distributors may collect the subscription fee on a monthly basis, but subscribers shall be advised that the expected subscription period is at least one year. Membership cards and similar items may be distributed electronically rather than in paper form.

Phillies: In an electronically distributed issue, the reader rather than the Society pays for the cost of paper, printing, collating, stapling, and postage. This is a savings to the Society of the lion’s share of $15 per year. It is reasonable that the Society share this savings with the subscribing members.

This is a proposal for discussion.
