Society Efforts

by George Phillies

We have a second typist-volunteer: Andrew York, POB 201117, Austin, TX 78720-1117 wandrew@aol.com. If you have an article that would need to be typed, Andy York has volunteered to type it and forward it to me. We could still use some members to volunteer to search the net for additional interesting articles for which we could ask reprint permission.

Thanks to Regional Director Mark Kramer, we have a new discount from Jolly Games, 3236 Peacock Lane Santa Maria CA 93455 www.jollygames.NET [NB: .net, not .com!]

I have a sort of project, with pieces, if people are interested in advancing on it. A reasonable fraction of our members buy miniatures. There would therefore be some reasonable benefit to finding dealers, mail order houses, or other suppliers who would in exchange for advertising on our New Members and Member Renewal flier give our members some modest discount.

Once we had a reasonable number of these in hand, we could more effectively recruit among miniatures gaming clubs. In fact, it just so happens that I have a list of some 400 miniatures clubs around the country to which we could mail a sample copy of strategist and a decent recruiting letter, once we have a supply of miniatures discounts and articles on miniatures for -S-. If you would like credit, and were willing to pay to mail -S- to clubs in your neighborhood, I could certainly arrange for that. I could even arrange for you to know when the mailing had happened, so that you could do in person outreach and tell people about Strategist.

We are getting a lot of membership renewals from the California area. Most of the credit for that event goes to Mark Kramer, our tireless Regional Director, a man who invests his time in his Society so that someday it will be a larger and better Society. You could be doing the same thing. If we want a better SGS, we need to invest out time and effort in it.

We continue to need more officers for the Society. Would you like to take over as Membership Secretary? You would have the task of contacting each new and renewing member, getting them their membership card and related documents, finding out what local news is happening, and reporting on it. Perhaps you would rather become a Regional Director. Regional Directors do outreach in their parts of the country, help members participate in the hobby,... Several Regional Directors have published directories of known gamers and their interests. Others have organized game conventions, some of which became quite large and successful. The difference between a newsletter with subscribers and a hobby club with activities is purely and simply the voluntary activity of you the membership.

Mark A. Kramer, Region Nine Regional Director, writes of his experiences at DunDraCon XXVI in February: I spoke with Rick Loomis, principle behind Flying Buffalo, Inc. and one of the hobby's truly nice guys. The latest edition of the legendary Nuclear War card-game is now available. This new edition also features two cards (one each Secret and Special) previously unknown to the "mythos" of the "NukeWar" world. Again available are the two expansions - Nuclear Escalation and NuclearProliferation, and, never before offered, decks of blank cards for the creation of personal, custom cards for your game. The three games feature new artwork and sell for $30.00 each ($27.00 with SGS members' 10% discount). The deck of blank cards sells for $10.00 ($9.00 for SGS members) for a deck of 56 cards. Shipping is $2.00 total per order for US addresses and $8.00 total per order for overseas. For more information and a comprehensive list of products offered write to Flying Buffalo, Inc. PO Box 1467, Scottsdale AZ 85252. Those who are postally challenged may go to http://www/flyingbuffalo.com.
