Gunnery Sergeant Hartman makes himself abundantly clear in Full Metal Jacket.. R. Lee Ermey is best known for his role as the sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. He actually was a former Drill Instructor, and was hired as a consultant to teach the actor how to drill USMC style. He performed a demonstration on videotape in which he yelled obscene insults and abuse non-stop for fifteen minutes without stopping, repeating, himself, or even flinching - despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. Director Kubrick was so impressed that he fired the actor, cast Ermey as Sergeant Hartman, ordered a transcript of the audition tape (it came to 250 pages), and exclusively used Ermey's insults in the script. Other trivia about Full Metal Jacket: Ermey hardly blinks at all in any scene. Also, he was involved in jeep accident during the making of the movie, in which he broke all of his ribs on one side. This is why in some scenes, he does not move one of his arms at all. Ermey's other screen credits in war movies include The Boys in Company C, Apocalypse Now (Uncredited role as a helicopter pilot), The Siege of Firebase Gloria, Purple Hearts, and of course he was the voice of "Sarge" in Toy Story.
