Best Air Combat Game?

Game Analysis

by Jeff Pawlowski

Blue Max is the game for you. It is a very simple and very exciting WWI dogfighting game. The original Boardgame version is out-of-print, but you can still find the "miniatures" version, done by RAFM. It is identical to the boardgame, but does not have airplane counters, a map, or dice. The creators of the game have a website (http://pease1. sr.unh.edu/1/bluemax/) that has very good support for the game. You can email the creators and get direct responses if you have any questions too.

As for miniatures, these are tough to find. There are not a large abundance of WWI airplane miniatures available. The best (IMHO) would be http://www.halcyon.com/shamrock for metal miniatures in 1:144 scale. In the same price range, you can do 1:72 scale plastic, but finding a good variety of models is hard. The best people for this is AirFix, but they've recently reduced their line and many of the WWI planes were cut.
