Outlaws

Game Review

by Henry Vogel

The best game simulating Wild West gunslinging is "Outlaws" by LucasArts. It is a first-person shoot-em up like Quake & Doom. Theme: Soundtrack for the game sounds just like the Sergio Leone's "spaghetti westerns". The storyboard follows a retired Henry Fonda-like marshal trying to rescue his kidnapped daughter and avenge his wife's murder by a local land baron who is trying to acquire the rights to his homestead.

Weapons: You get to use a six-shooter, a long range carbine with scope, a single-barrel shotgun, a double barrel shotgun, a sawed-off shotgun, dynamite, a gatling gun, knife and fists to kill your adversary.

Play: You can walk, jump, run & squat while looking around, up & down Even though the game against the PC AI is adequate, the game really shines when you play it multiplayer over the network or Internet. There are several modes of multiplayer combat available besides deathmatches. You can play in teams, play capture the flag and play capture the fool with the chicken. You have to reload your weapon after you shoot off all the rounds. There is nothing like hearing your gun clicking on empty barrels realizing that you forgot to reload after the last shootout. You have a choice of selecting from 8 different characters each possessing different strengths/weaknesses and default weapons forcing one to play each character in a different manner to realize its full potential.

Scenarios: The game comes with several excellent scenarios that can be played multiplayer. But an editor is available on the Internet that allows one to create his own scenarios. There are numerous Outlaws websites where people make their scenario creations available.

Value for price: The game is available from Walmart or Electronics Boutique for under $20. Quite a bargain for a game that recreates that old Gunslinger boardgame so well.
