I just tried out two of these last night... here are some thoughts: File 13 looks like there's more joke than game. Fortunately there is still more game there than in something like PanzerPranks, and as many laughs for those familiar with the friction between game designers and publishers (most of the game titles are amusing... we called the green wargame pieces AH and the yellow "somethin' & somethin'" pieces TSR.) ;-) For example, designs get "stuck in play-testing" or you are hoping to get "Sam Semicolon" as your developer because he is a bit faster at moving things along, etc. This is a very fast moving, humorous little game that would be a great warm up or wind-down game for a group. Game titles advance, egress, or get dumped into File 13 according to die rolls and card play. The card play adds a bit of strategy but the die rolls still keep a lot of surprises in store for the players (but I'd guess that game authors might find this to be quite accurate.) ;-) I enjoyed this one a lot more than I expected I would, even with only two players... Food Fight is a good idea, but the mechanics are too wargamey for their own good. And the counter density and towering/toppling stacks are a bit of a problem (especially in the food line, which probably wasn't as big a factor with the flat pieces in the magazine version.) Not to mention that both of my "kids" got nabbed by teachers with virtually no way out (one by being stunned the turn before the teacher appeared, the other by... well, I guess there was a way out of the second one if I was paying attention to the last teacher in the staff lounge.) The lesson for next time is to stay in the middle of the room and away from the Gym entrance! ;-) We did a fairly quick read of the rules to get started but it seemed like there was some information missing here and there. I'd need to play it a couple more times to get a good handle on whether I'm missing some virtues, but so far I'm not in a hurry to break it out again... We'll pass on King's Table... although if it was played for 1300 years, it must have something going for it. ;-) The remaining two sound like they have the most promise for me, since I tend to enjoy race games, and can't think of any other board-games that attempt to model boxing (though I know of a few wrestling games.) Haven't had a shot at these yet either... I am an avid Emperor's Treasure fan having greatly enjoyed the magazine version. I'd definitely recommend you give it a try with a larger group, as it has the same goofy D&D-lite charm as The Castle. ;-) Back to Strategist Number 323 Table of Contents Back to Strategist List of Issues Back to MagWeb Master Magazine List © Copyright 1999 by SGS This article appears in MagWeb (Magazine Web) on the Internet World Wide Web.
