Post Midway

WWII Pacific War Scenario

by Ken Ellis

My guys spent the last 6 weeks playing one helluva game of the battle of Midway, using an umpire and the spawn of the Flat Top system. The game ended early on the fourth day with both navies carrier forces shattered and Midway’s garrison smashed. The Base had been reduced earlier in the game and had just completed enough repairs to start to functioning again. The surviving planes from the Yorktown would make it to Midway and this hastened the IJN retreat. The Japanese would have easily taken Midway and claimed victory but there was the issue of 5 American battleships. The umpire snuck them into the US OOB with an escore of 3 light cruisers and 13 additional destroyers. DOH! The casualty list looks something like this:

    USA
ATLANTA HEAVY DAMAGE, DETROIT SUNK, RALEIGH SUNK, YORKTOWN SUNK, ENTERPRISE SUNK, HORNET SUNK 5 DD’S SUNK, 4 SS’S SUNK, MIDWAY GARRISON ELIMINATED!

    IJN

YURA LIGHT DAMAGE,,HIEI LIGHT DAMAGE, KONGO LIGHT DAMAGE, TONE HEAVY DAMAGE,CHIKUMA LIGHT DAMAGE, SORYU LIGHT DAMAGE, HIRYU HEAVY DAMAGE, AKAGI SUNK, KAGA SUNK, ZUIHO SUNK 11 DD’S SUNK , 5 AP’S SUNK WITH INFANTRY, 1 SS SUNK

The IJN saved about 18 plane factors on the Soryu and the USA about the same. After retreating and reorganizing the IJN players vow to take Midway! Admiral Yamamoto returns to Japan to apologize to the Emperor.

What follows is a scenario for Yaquinto’s CV. The opposing orders of battle should be kept secret from the players at all times. This info is for the Umpire.

Victory conditions are the same as in CV. To win you must have a 100 pt lead or more at the games end. Midway is worth 200vp to the owner at games end. We are storing this scenario for future use. We’ll let you know how it turns out. If any one else trys it then let us know about it in the pages of the S! Believe it or not! The Yadkin Valley Wargamers have Eagle and the Sunset up right now. It looks like the War in the Thirties to start.
