One game that has not been mentioned much is "The Lonely Mountain", loosely based on events described in the Hobbit. It uses a Magic Realm-like system for encounters, where the monsters are mixed in with the treasure cards, and set up on a set up sheet. Set up is much faster than MR, though *grin*, and the combat is more wargame-like: You roll dice, based on the type of unit that is attacking a certain target type. 1-6 players can play, with different races having some different abilities, depending on the rules that you choose to use. The game has a set playing time, by introducing Smaug the dragon. When he appears, it's time to cut and run, to collect VP for your men and treasure. Most VP wins. You can fight Smaug at the end, but you'd have to be pretty lucky to beat him. All in all, it seems like a decent game that lets everyone play (You don't need a GM like in Heroquest) I found a copy at a garage sale for $1, complete, along with a Heroquest for .75, complete, but that's just bragging... *grin* Back to Strategist 318 Table of Contents Back to Strategist List of Issues Back to MagWeb Master Magazine List © Copyright 1999 by SGS This article appears in MagWeb (Magazine Web) on the Internet World Wide Web.
