Warhammer Ancient Battles

Game Analysis

by Kevin Shope

I got my copy of WAB and it looks good. Despite Jervis Johnson's and his collaborators' vociferous disclaimers about not being connected to GW, I see that they continue to use GW's marketing practices, i.e., an expensive, well produced product and numerous equally expensive supplements that cover information omitted in the original rules set. I know this sounds like a typical anti-GW diatribe but I thought I'd put my two cents in anyway.

Expensive? $30.00 - $35.00 (here in the US anyway) Hmmm... not really. That's what most companies "basic" set/book is priced at, Chrono-pia, Battlestorm, Battleground, etc. are all roughly $30 and Spearhead, Fire and Fury and others are a few dollars less but don't have as many pages.

Well produced? Certainly...

Numerous equally expensive supplements? Again, maybe... but not outside of the industry "standard". Battleground is a good example, it has 4 supplements at around $15 each. Now that I think about it, not many rulesets come with full "army lists" for the period they are trying to cover. My guess is that WABs supplements will be priced around $20-$25 and most likely will be worth about $20-$25.

I (for some ungodly reason) feel the need to also comment on the connection between GW and WAB. When I first heard about WAB I called GWUS mail order thinking I would be able to at least "pre-order" it, but found that the "troll" didn't even know what I was talking about. I called back weeks later and was told they might have it in another month. I called back 4 weeks later and was told the same thing... in another month. Even in the UK you can't get it through normal GW channels (I think?). In the US, I think only Brookhurst carries WAB. The rulebook itself has only 1(!)picture of a GW mini (the plastic bretonnian archer)all other minis are Foundry. So it would seem to me that they are very separate entities.
