Another month rolls around, with time for another issue. The sad news in on the first page. I haven’t received the elections results yet, but we can count on it happening bye and bye. Issues contents suffered an interference due to problems with my computer — the monitor decided to start smoking. I am most thankful to the many of you who have volunteered to type articles into electronic files; the back accumulation of printed articles has been entirely transformed. Let me ask for a new type of volunteer work: society activist. We need members who will go out into the community, attend conventions, write for our magazine, and encourage others to join the SGS. The basic issue is simple: no one will join the SGS unless they are encouraged to do so. Few people will continue as members, unless those of us who are in the SGS contribute to the society by running events, organizing local groups, putting up posters at game stores and conventions, and in general doing the sorts of things that make the SGS a worthwhile organization that others will want to join. Strategy gaming is basically a social activity. There are few things in the hobby that are easily done well by a single person. It’s like dating, or having a supper club. If you want people together, if you want to meet people who share your interests, you can’t just sit back and wait... You need to take active steps to get what you want. You need to stand up and Serve the Hobby, at least a bit, to be able to enjoy the benefit of having other people do the same for you.
