Regular Events

1998

This column is an experiment, in reporting on gaming events hither and thither that are not yearly like conventions, but that instead happen on a weekly or monthly basis, like club meetings. We obviously can’t cover everything every month, but will try to return to events. Unless it’s a short walk, try to call ahead. Reliability of these entries is not guaranteed:

Phillip Fayers, College of Cardiff. P.Fayers@astro.cf.ac.uk, reports that on Saturday 4th July there will be the second in a series of board game tournaments at `The Trading Post' in Cardiff. The tournament kicks off at around 10:30 and lasts until the shopping arcade closes at around 17:30. The sort of games which are likely to feature are Bohnanza, Elfenlands, Modern Art, El Grande, Canyon, Manhattan, Settlers, Euphrat & Tigris, Cheops, etc.

The Trading Post is in an arcade opposite Cardiff Castle, less than 5 minutes walk from Cardiff Central station. Simply leave the Central Station through the Bus station, turn right past Greggs the Bakers. Turn left at the traffic lights into St Mary Street. Cross over St Mary Street and continue down towards the castle. Turn right off St Mary St into the shopping arcade with the Canadian Muffin shop at the corner. Turn left in the arcade and the Trading Post is on your left.

dk2@dillinger.io.com (the Dave) writes us about a group of the Silicon Valley Gamers. There is now an informal sub-group of SVBers who like to play certain CCGs (not Magic!) at SVB meetings, contact Dave for details.] The next meeting of the Silicon Valley Boardgamers (SVB) will be Wed. June 3, at the game store formerly known as Match Play (now called "Neutral Ground") starting around 7 PM. Match Play/Neutral Ground is located in the San Antonio Shopping Center (near Sears) at the northeast corner of San Antonio and El Camino in Mountain View. They charge a $2 admission fee to use their playing area, which is refunded if you buy at least $4 worth of merchandise from them.

To contact them phone: (650)947-0398 e-mail: blchew@matchplay .com. 560 Showers Dr. #4, Mountain View. For more information, or to get on the SVB mailing list, you can contact Dave Kohr at kohr @sgi.com. The SVB has a rudimentary Web page for atv href="http://www.io.com/~dk2/svb"> http://www.io.com/~dk2/svb. SVB meets every Wednesday, same time, same place.

We are advised: Games Day is a quarterly series of daylong boardgaming sessions held in the Bay Area. The next Games Day will be at the Los Altos Public Library on Sunday, June 7, from noon to 11 PM. Gaming will be in the library's Community Room, which is just off the south lobby in the southeast corner of the building. Entry is free, but a small ($1) donation to the library will be appreciated. The library is in the Civic Center complex at 13 S. San Antonio Road (east side of the road), just south of the intersection of San Antonio and Edith. Since the libraryis located near downtown Los Altos, there are good restaurants nearby for a dinner break.

There is a Web page for Games Day III at http://www.io.com/~dk2/gamesday. For further information, contact Dave Kohr (e-mail: kohr@sgi.com, night/ weekend phone: (650)428-1398).The last Games Day was held in March and was a great success, as over 50 attendees played more than 40 different games of every sort imaginable:German-style abstract strategy games, railroad games, family games, non-collectible card games, and historical wargames by Avalon Hill and other publishers.
