THE BATTLE The fighting raged on throughout the morning as the Italians attempted to gain the summit of the ridge. The Greek defenders inflicted heavy casualties but were forced back when the Italian armor arrived. An antiquated French artillery piece blew up and disheartened the defenders at about the same time that Cpt. Andolini seized the monastery. The Greeks withdrew in good order and counterattacked the next day at dawn. The Italians were routed, with the brave Cpt. Andolini falling shortly after the firing started. November 2nd, 1940 The Italian BARI infantry division is meeting heavy resistance in the mountain passes in the early stages of the ill-fated invasion of Greece. The Greek 9th Mountain Division is encountered and elemets of the Italian division finds itself heavily engaged around the mountain top Church of St. Sabastian. In a conflict reminiscent of the Holy Wars of early centuries, the Catholics and Orthodox warriors face off over the tombstones of a violent past ...
