How to Make Hills

Techniques

by Carl C. Nott

This is what I do, and they look pretty spiffy. Get some blueboard (which is sometimes pink) or some sort of 1" thick foam or styrofoam. Be prepared to make a mess (vacuum cleaners are a must). Cut out the.' basic hill shape you want by using a blade of some sort. (I use the blade from a hacksaw) on the foam and cutting at about a 30 degree angle (like cutting the top off of a jack-o- lantern) so that the sides are sloped enough so they don't look like shear cliffs. Just try to make it so that they look sloped but you can't balance troops on them (never works). Smooth the rough edges with sand paper.

I have a Dremel moto-tool and I use the little sanding drum, which works really slick, but sand paper is fine (though a little tedious). Find some spray paint of the appropriate green. You should take some foam to the place you buy the paint and try it out so you know that it won't melt your hill. Testors spray enamel works pretty good, and it comes in some really good shades of green. Stick the hill on an old butcher knife or fondue stick. Get your flocking stuff (I use Blended Turf and some of the little gravel stuff you can buy at train places) out and some newspaper to catch the excess. Shake the spray paint up good. Spray the exposed areas of the hill with spray paint and while the paint is still wet, sprinkly your flocking on really good. This is easier than painting the hill, letting it dry, and then, glueing it on, and it sticks at least as well and you don't get that slimy "Elmer's look" where you put the glue on too thick. If you want multi-layei hills you just stick a small hill on a big hill and either glue it or (what I do) just make a lot of single layer hills and stack em. This is a lot cheaper than Geo-Hex and just as good, though not with the thousands of combinations (and pieces).
