Notes from the Underground

Kentucky

by William Sariego

Greetings, fellow members of wargaming's oldest and most prestigious amateur gaming organization! Just a few notes from the Bluegrass state of Kentucky

Belated congragulations to fellow SGS member Marvin Levin of Appleton, Wisconsin. In thumbing through a back issue of THE GENERAL (one does that when the current one is late) I noticed that Marvin won a contest ran by AH. The issue was Vol. 28 No. 3 so again, jolly good show, old chap.

I was recently able to pick up a copy of GDW's classic game of the '73 Arab-Israeli War, BAR LEV (published 1977). However, the terrain effects chart is missing. A buddy has the original Conflict version (circa 1973) and I've been able to make do with it. But for those familiar with both versions, although the basic game was unchanged, the map difference is like comparing STALINGRAD to RUSSIAN FRONT. If anyone has a copy of the GDW edition (or know someone who does) I would be eternally in your debt if you could copy the TEC for me. On a similar note my advanced rulebook for the old SPI game SPIES has disappeared. It was but four pages long (real big advanced rules!) and I remember them all with one exception, so I really don't geed a copy. But can anyone tell me how many action points each country gets a turn?

Is anyone going to AVALONCON? I know Judy Krauss will be running the FIREPOWER tournament, and "Mr. Bulge," Randy Heller will be there. If the "W. Jaffe" running the EMPIRES IN ARMS event is our William Jaffe, that will make three SGS folks, including myself. If anyone else is attending, write or give me a call (606-278-2410). Perhaps we can squeeze in a social event during the less intense gaming time.

If anyone is thinking about going but is put off by the astronomical costs of the Marriot, take heart. Cheaper hotels exist in the area. I'll be staying at the Red Roof Inn which is only four exits down the interstate from the site. If anyone wants the number for reservations just call or write.
