I - INTRODUCTION A French squadron under the command of Commodore Bompart consisting of one ship of the line, 8 frigates, and 3000 troops left Brest on September 6th to invade Ireland. The expedition was weak and ill conceived from the start, and came to a disastrous end when it was intercepted by a British squadron commanded by Captain Sir J.B. Warren off Tory Island. After a four hour engagement, four French ships were captured including Bompart's flagship the Hoche. Of the 5 French ships which got away from the British that day, 3 would be captured before reaching the safety of French ports. II. PREVAILING WIND CONDITIONS Wind Direction: 1
