Two Beasts

Su-27 Flanker and
IAF Kurnass F-4/2000

Introduction

Air Superiority was originally designed in 1985 with last minute information on Soviet aircraft going in just before the game went to press in 1986. Of course, not much info existed then on the new Flanker, Fulcrum, Fencer, and Frogfoot Soviet fighters. Those data cards were created from what little was known and through intelligent guesswork, some of which turns out to have been, understandably, off the mark. Marc Miller expects to publish an update edition of Air Superiority in 1991 which will feature the second edition rules and revised data cards, but until then, we will continue to provide updated Soviet data cards in AIR POWER.

What follows is Rob Pruden's report on the Flanker and Bob Gross' article on Israel's F4 upgrade, along with data cards developed from the information those two, and a few others, have forwarded to me. A scenario included with this issue pits the upgraded Phantom against the Soviet Union's latest and greatest Flanker as an exploration of whether or not a revamped older airframe is viable against new technology aircraft. Hope you enjoy them!
