Greenhill Books News

by Paul Chamberlain

Greenhill have an exciting publishing schedule in the Napoleonic field this year.

February sees the publication of 1815: The Waterloo Campaign Wellington, his German Allies and the battles of Ligny and Quatre Bras by Peter Hofschroer, priced at £ 25.00. This will be the first of two volumes that examines the 1815 campaign in a new light, using material from German, British and Dutch archives that has not been published before, to show the crucial role played by the troops from Prussia and the German states in the campaign.

In March Greenhill will publish Napoleon: How He Did It - The Memoirs of Baron Fain, First Secretary of the Emperor's Cabinet, edited by Proctor Jones and priced at £ 24.95. Baron Fain was Napoleon's private secretary and had unparalleled access to the thoughts and deeds of Napoleon and to the Emperor's running of his empire and military machine. This work will detail the events of military and historical significance and represents a first hand account of Napoleon's character and personality.

One book that I shall look forward to is A History of the Peninsular War Volume Vl11: The Biographical Dictionary of British Officers Killed and Wounded 1808-1814 by Dr John A. Hall. This is priced at £ 35.00 and will be published in April. It is a complementary volume to the monumental study of the Peninsular War by Sir Charles Oman, and is a con~ prehensive biographical dictionary of more than 3,000 officers in British, Portuguese and Spanish service killed or wounded in the seven years of that campaign.

Also in April comes The Note-Books of Captain Coignet: Soldier of the Empire, 1799-1816 by Captain Jean-Roch Coignet, with an introduction by Sir John Fortescue. Coignet's account follows him from a conscript in Italy in 1800, through all the major campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars, fighting at Austerlitz and Jena, participating in the taking of Madrid and Vienna, the 1812 Campaign in Russia, the Battle of Leipzig and the Waterloo Campaign.

May sees the publication of The Jena Campaign, 1806 by Colonel E. N. Maude. This is part of the Greenhill Napoleonic Library and is priced at £ 19.50, and will study Napoleon's total defeat of the Prussian Army at the Battle of Jena, giving a key insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the two opposing armies as well as examining every move of the campaign.

Also in May will be published The Greenhill Napoleonic Wars Data Book by Digby Smith (known to Napoleonic enthusiasts from his many books as Otto Von Pivka). This work will provide a comprehensive coverage of every action in every campaign of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with accurate data on over 2,000 actions (land and sea). One that should prove very useful to historians and wargamers alike. This book will be priced at £ 40.00.
