[Note: This article first appeared in the MGM Newsletter dated Summer of 1992 and appears courtesy of the Miniature Gamers of Michigan] The Turkish Army of the Ottoman Empire of the period under study varied little from the beginning to the end. While the Turks were ahead of the West in flrearms at the beginning of the period, they lagged far behind by the end. Only the new order army of Nazam-i Jedid were equipped with modern firearms. Armor tended to lighten from the beginning of the period to the end, with the Eastern provinces being more heavily armored than the Western. The Turkish heavy cavalry never attained its Western counterpart's heaviness of armor. The forces of the Ottoman Empire were divided into five differing types: Standing Army, Feudal Hosts, Provincial Armies, Tribute States Armies, and Freebooters.
