Hanoverian Infantry Uniform Guide

By Bill Biles

Hanoverian infantry wore red coats with red shoulder straps and slashed cuffs in the British pattern. Plain yellow or white was worn on the coat at the button holes with two strips also below the lapels and two strips above the slashed cuff. The lace color was determined by the color of the buttons: brass or silver. Lace on the tricorne was also colored to match the button color. Tricornes also had pom-poms and side bobs that were unique to each regiment. Belting was a light buff. Stocks were black for all regiments except for 1B, which had red stocks. Breeches were blue for the Guards regiments and straw for all other regiments. Vests were in the facing color, except for regiments 3A, l0B and 13B, who had white vests. Hair was worn in queues, though the grenadiers tucked their queues under their mitre caps. Mustaches were preferred, though not required. Gaiters were white. Scabbards and cartridge pouches were black. Sword hilts were brass-colored. [13]

Grenadier mitres were like those of the Prussians with a metal front plate (though often painted), a red bag and a pom-pom. In a departure from the Prussian mitre, Hanoverian mitres had a front flap, like those of British grenadiers, in the facing color of the regiment. Grenadier officers and NCO's also wore the mitre caps of the regiment.

NCO's wore the same uniforms with the following exceptions. Lace was gold or silver. Cartridge pouches were white. The vest was edged with gold or silver lace.

Officers wore their coats without turnbacks. Lace was gold or silver to correspond with the button color. Officer's tricornes were decorated with lace and a cockade without either pom-poms or bobs. They wore gold gorgets and a yellow silk sash over their right shoulder in the British fashion. The sword was silver-hilted.
