1757: Disengagement

August 22, 1757

Translated and Edited With Additional Materials By Neil Cogswell

Fearing that, separated from him by the Neisse, the Corps of General Winterfeldt might be attacked by General Nadasdy, the King of Prussia sent across a reinforcement of 4 battalions. The Austrian army sent out a foraging party escorted by 4,000 men. The commissary in charge was given strict orders that this forage was to be executed with the least possible damage to the country.

All the light troops who are still on this side of the Neisse, and who had discomforted the Prussians in their retreat, have taken up posts just outside cannon range of the Prussian camp at Bernstadt.

400 recruits for different regiments arrived from Austria. We sent home several Austrian deserters who had been arrested by the advanced posts of light troops. Colonel Jahnus has assembled some magazines around Striegau. He has also collected about 15,000 florins in contributions; this, he has sent to the military chest at Headquarters.
