Dr. David G Chandler, former Head of the War Studies Dept, RMA Sandhurst, passed away Sunday 10th October 2004 after a long illness. For those of you who might not be aware, David was a long time wargamer and internationally distinguished military historian, and friend of First Empire, who in healthier times would drop the odd jocular note to the editor pointing out the odd error or additional tit bit of information. He wrote numerous tomes, perhaps the most famous being The Campaigns of Napoleon. This single book has probably spawned more Napoleonic wargamers and amateur historians than any other and for this alone the Napoleonic community owes a huge debt of thanks. The Chandler family -- his wife Gill and sons Paul, John and Mark -- have advised “we have greatly appreciated the many letters of condolence we have received since David’s death. We hope you will understand that it has not been possible to respond to each letter individually”. They have also advised that a service of Thanksgiving for David's life and work will be held early in February at Sandhurst, but attendance is limited, and there are security restrictions. If you might wish details of the service, please apply to: Paul Chandler The Hermitage, Sunderland Bridge Durham, DH6 5HD E-mail: paulc@traidcraft.co.uk Some people have asked whether they can make a charitable donation in memory of David. If you wished to do so, cheques should be sent to The Stroke Association (c/o Linda Newman, Oakhill Cottage, Moons Hill, Fensham, Surrey, GU10 3AW). The family say that “the local branch was of great support to David during his latter years.” Napoleonic News Desk
