The Official Nelson Commemorations Committee has compiled a programme of events to mark the 200th anniversary of the visit of Nelson and Lady Hamilton to South Wales and the Midlands during the months of July to September 1802. The programme began in July, so I will only list those events from August onwards. Saturday 17th - Sunday 25th August Nelson and the Hamiltons visited Monmouth and Chepstow during their tour and spent three days in Monmouth. They arrived by river from Ross-on-Wye and visited the recently built naval temple on the Kymin. Nelson was presented with the freedom of the town. A series of events in Monmouth and Chepstow to commemorate this will include: River Wye family and fun regatta; HMS Victory cutter displays; recreation of nelson and the Hamiltons' visit to the Kymin; Historical Maritime Society and other re-enactment groups; Lectures, including The Hero of the Nile by Colin White, National Maritime Museum; Nelson Letters Exhibi-tion; Nelson Monmouth museum open daily with special activities; Nelson family workshops. Tel: 01600 713519 Birmingham: Monday 26th August 11.30am - 4.30pm. Venue: Soho House, Birmingham Special events throughout the day at Soho House, the home of the industrialist Matthew Boulton, which Nelson visited. Events include lectures on Nelson and his navy, Shanty singers and themed tours of the House. Admission £3.00 adults, £2.50 concessions, £8.00 family. Tickets on sale at the door. Venue: The Banqueting Suite, The Council House, Birmingham Wine Reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and lecture on Nelson and the Hamiltons by Colin White (National Maritime Museum).
