From the Peninsula to Waterloo:
Weekend Conference

Venue: Higham Hall, Bassenthwaite, Cumbria.

This is a joint venture between the Association of Friends of the Waterloo Committee and the Lake District’s Residential College for Continuing Education. Higham Hall is located in a Georgian country house, set in a beautiful location with views of Skiddaw and Bassenthwaite Lake, and provides a very high standard of accommodation and catering. The principal speaker will be Ian Fletcher, with supporting papers by members of the Association. The programme will be:

Friday 10th

Dinner followed by the lecture The Peninsular War: Sieges in Spain (Ian Fletcher).

Saturday 11th a.m.

The Peninsular War: The Light Division and the Defence of the Portuguese Frontier (Ian Fletcher).

The Peninsular War: The Battle of Albuera (Ian Fletcher).

Afternoon free for visits to Cockermouth Castle, seat of

Captain Henry Wyndham, who is reputed to have closed the gate at Hougoumont, and the National Trust property at Wordsworth’s birthplace.

Care of the Injured during the Peninsular War (Michael Crumplin FRCS).

Quatre Bras (Clive Hamilton).

Sunday 12th a.m.

The Battle of Waterloo (Ian Fletcher).

The Future of the Waterloo Battlefield (Graeme Cooper).

Question and Answer Session (Speakers and a panel of Association members).

Lunch and departure.
