This new book (to be published by Constable in September, price £18.99 hardback) will examine Napoleon’s life and death on the island of St. Helena, residing in his ‘prison’ of Longwood under the supervision of its Governor Sir Hudson Lowe. This reappraisal of the Emperor’s captivity has been produced by Frank Giles, and will explain what really happened there, including the general treatment of Napoleon and the poisoning controversy. Some historians have reviled Lowe, but looking afresh at the evidence the author portrays him, though unattractive in many ways, in a more favourable light. More Napoelonic Newsdesk
