Autumn Conference
Saturday 26 September 1998

Lecture Theatre, National Army Museum, Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, London.

This is the programme for what promises to be an interesting and varied meeting, with a mix of British subjects and some sessions looking at the German side of the Napoleonic Wars. Please note that the times of the conference have been changed so that the meeting will finish at 4.00pm. The Newsdesk session has been dispensed with, and items of news will be broadcast throughout the day. Admission (to both the museum and the conference) is free to all enthusiasts of the period, whether members of the Napoleonic Association or not. If you are not a member, then take the opportunity to visit one of our popular events and discover what the Association can offer you. The museum has a cafeteria and book shop.

Timetable:

10.00 Museum opens. Members may set up displays in the Lecture Theatre.
11.00 Introduction by Paul Chamberlain.
11.05 The 42nd at Toulouse by Tom Greenshields.
The 42nd Royal Highland Regiment played a prominent part in the closing battle of the Peninsula campaign, losing over 400 men killed and wounded. This presentation describes the role played by the regiment in that action.
12.05 The East India Company: Traders or Administrators? by Peter Williams. This will be a brief summary of the Company's organisations, possessions and forces during the period 1790 to 1816.
12.20 Items of news, announcements etc.
12.30 Lunch.
1.45 Introduction to afternoon session.
2.00 The Battle of Austerlitz Advance to Contact by Tim Hicks.A look at the opening moves of the campaign. A View in the Fog by Dave Hollins.The Austrian forces at the battle.The Battlefield of Austerlitz by John Salmon. A look at the battlefield today.
2.45 Tea.
3.00 The Uniforms and Organisation of the Württemberg Army, 1793-1815 by John Henderson. This presentation will examine the organisation of the Württemburg Army during the period, together with an account of how the style of uniform developed through the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
4.00 Conference ends.
5.00 Museum closes.
