Richard drifts over into the battles at Zurich, which seem to be confused by some people. The first battle was fought over 4th-6th June, in which (please note Ian Barstow) Archduke Charles inflicted a limited defeat on Massena, then well dug in around the excellent defensive position of the Zurichberg, forcing the French to pull back from there. Based on Angeli's Erzherzog Karl als Feldherr and Heeresorganisator (1896-97) and Archduke Charles' own account of the campaign Der Feldzug 1799 in Deutchland und der Schweiz (Vol 3 of Ausgewählte Schriften 1893), the Austrian order of battle for First Zurich was: Left. IR7 Karl Schröder (3) There were three Swiss battalions in Austrian service paid by the British in the area, but there weren't any Bavarians. Once Charles had been ordered back to Germany by Vienna, Massena took the chance to defeat a small Austrian contingent under Hotze and the advance-guard of Suvarov's army under Korsakov on September 25th-26th. I don't have anything detailed on Second Zurich. I also don't have any comprehensive OB for Hohenlinden, the only accurate records probably being buried deep in the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna. The reference in Furse to "two battalions of the Württemberg contingent" may be IR38, whose Inhaber was one of the older members of the ruling family of Württemberg. Like many others from the German nobility, they pursued careers in the Austrian army and were appointed inhabers. Certainly that is the case with the "Nassau Kurassier", which at this time were the 9th Kurassier Nassau-Usingen, with distinguishing colours light blue facings and white buttons. After a reduction in the heavy cavalry in 1801, it became 5th Kurassier, changing its Inhaber to Sommariva. DH.
