Eagle Miniatures

25mm Wurttemburg Chasseur 1806

reviewed by Dave Watkins

When this arrived I was impressed with the proportion and animation of the figure. He is advancing rapidly, leaning into his charge, obviously shouting some Germanic profanity, with a short pattern musket and (impressively!) long bayonet thrust ahead of him. The sample received was cleanly cast, with no flash lines and measured 32mm from the soles of his feet to the highest point of the shako. If one counts the plume, this is increased to 38mm. The engraved detail on the figure, i.e. where breeches end and gaiters begin, is not very deep, I would have liked to seen it deeper, as a thick coat of paint might obliterate the detail making painting difficult. On the other hand, items like buttons, epaulets, the centre disc of the pompom, chin strap and musket lock are very well raised, making them easy to paint.

My reference sources on the Wurttemburgers are somewhat lacking in detail, in order to give a definitive statement on the uniform accuracy as depicted. But it does seem to be a fair representation from what I have been able to check. The figure is shown with full pack and equipment, cartridge box correctly suspended on a waist belt on the stomach, and short sword and scabbard, suspended from a hanger. I had a little problem with the bayonet at this point. As it was shown fitted to the sidearm, I would have expected to see either an empty bayonet loop, or more likely, owing to the size of the bayonet, an empty scabbard, neither were shown. The detail on the face was well formed, I was particularly impressed with the open mouth and moustache. Ibis guy means business! This is what I would describe as a good gaming figure rather than a collector's figure.
