by Arthur Harman

GENERAL IDEA (Both sides)

The map is blue territory. A red force has invaded Blue territory from the North West. for the purposes of this game, set in the Napoleonic Wars, the railway line will be ignored.

SPECIAL IDEA FOR RED. GENERALMAJOR BRUMMBAR

It is the evening of 28th August, 1813. The Advance Guard of the Red Army, which you have the honour to command, reached Silberberg at dusk today. The main body of the Red Army is some twenty miles to your rear. You have been ordered to secure a suitable river crossing, for the army's artillery park and baggage train, across the River Selz. Blue cavalry patrols were sighted this afternoon at Kramerhofe, Alt Goldberg and on Der Weisse Berg above Nermweiler.

RED ADVANCE GUARD

    3 Squadrons IV Hussar Regiment
    4 Squadrons III Uhlan regiment
    1 battalion 11 Jager Regiment
    IX Infantry Regiment (3 battalions)
    VII Infantry Regiment (3 battalions)
XII Reserve Infantry Regiment (2 battalions)
1 Horse Artillery Battery (6 pdrs.)
1 Foot Artillery Battery (6 pdrs.)
Baggage Train and Ammunition Wagons (3 mile column)

ORDERS

Draw up orders for an advance at first light tomorrow (5.00 am), giving details of your order of march and intervals to be left between units, and specifying reconnaissance tasks for cavalry detachments.

SPECIAL IDEA FOR BLUE: GENERALMAJOR SCHNURRBART

The main body of the blue Army has fallen back to Grossmau today, 28th August 1813, and will march tomorrow for the fortress of Grunberg (off map) by way of Schonkirch. You command the-Blue Rear Guard and have been ordered to prevent red forces crossing the River Selz before nightfall, to allow the main body to continue its withdrawal unmolested, when the Rear Guard may retire upon Grunberg to rejoin the Army. You must not commit your forces so that they are unable to withdraw, but preserve the rear Guard to cover the main body.

Your cavalry patrols at Kramerhof, Alt Goldberg and Der Weisse Berg reported that a Red force of approximately Brigade strength entered Silberberg during the afternoon and sent patrols through Neu Sellheim and Altstedten, which retired on sighting the Blue outposts.

BLUE REAR GUARD

    3 Squadrons 1st Hussar Regiment
    4 Squadrons 6th Uhlan regiment
    1 battalion IM Jager Regiment
    9th Infantry Regiment (3 battalions)
    12th Infantry Regiment (3 battalions)
1 Horse Artillery Battery (6 pdrs.)

ORDERS

For the purpose of this game it is assumed that your forces fell back during the morning of 28th August to take up defensive positions to hold the line of the River Selz. You may, therefore, decide where to position your forces, as of nightfall on the 28th, save that no troops may be placed West of a line from Kramerhofe to Klein Hagen. Inform the umpire of these positions before writing orders. Inform the umpire of these positions before writing orders for the 29th August. these orders must specify any measures taken to put villages in a state of defence overnight - note that your men would have time only to improvise barricades and loophole wooden buildings - any preparations to destroy bridges over the Selz, (you have been advised by your battery commander that the entire contents of his reserve caissons might suffice to-blow up one of the bridges at Neu Goldberg or Kippringen, but would certainly destroy the wooden trestle on the Nennweiler-Karsdorf road, although placing the charges will take several hours), and on your own position at dawn.

UMPIRE'S NOTE

Once Blue has indicted position, determine the logical route(s) his forces would have taken withdrawing from Silberberg and decide which of these movements would have been observed by Red cavalry patrols, informing Red commander accordingly.
