Wellington Conference

15 July 1995

by Paul Chamberlain

The Wellington Conference is to be organised by the Archives and Manuscripts Department, University of Southampton, in conjunction with the Hartley Institute. Its focus will be principally on the military career of Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington.

The Wellington Papers held at the University of Southampton are a collection of major importance both for military and political studies. They span the period from 1790 until the Duke's death in 1852. Among the overall holdings are approximately 15,000 papers for Wellington's career in India up to 1805. The section for the Peninsular War, which exceeds 25,000 papers in total, provides an unrivalled source for the history of British participation in the war. The post-Peninsular War period is equally well documented. There are, for example, about 30,000 papers for the period 1833-52, which includes material for Wellington's third tenure of the post of Commander-in-Chief of the British Army.

The conference will provide an important forum to promote recent Southampton-based research work. The papers presented at the conference will reflect not only the wealth of material available, but also the range of subjects which are currently being studied.

The Speakers will be:

Brian April Relations between Wellington and the Portuguese Government.
    Bill Halliwell Wellington and India.
Mark Romans and Stephen Petty on the Peninsular War.
Karen Robson Wellington and Military Patronage.
Chris Woolgar Gurwood's Edition of Wellington's Dispatches and Wellington's Image and Reputation.

There will also be a keynote address.

Details of the conference are available from Dr Chris Woolgar or Karen Robson, Archives and Manuscripts Department, Hartley Library, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton, SO17 1BJ.
