5. The Battle of Oudenarde from J.J. White

I have a query on the Marlburian period concerning the Battle of Oudenarde, 1708

A. Sources give 150 squadrons of Allied cavalry present at Oudenarde. I have been able to identify only 57 (20 Prussian; 17 British; 8 Hanoverian; 12 Danish). Were the ballance of 93 all Dutch or a mixture? Can anyone help?

B. Also any information on the French Order of Battle at Oudenardt would be appreciated.

6. Waistcoats from Daniel Meade.

In 18CMN&Q #1 p31 Stuart Reid gave some interesting details of how Highland regiments C1759 converted old coats into waistcoats.

This practice was used in the early 1700s, but when did it begin?

Did newly raised regiments do without waistcoats for the first year, or were they given new ones? Waistcoats were being worn in the 1690's, but when were they introduced?

If a waistcoat was an old "top" cost how was it altered so that a cost of the same size could be worn over the top? Were the cuffs, sleeves, collar removed or the skirts cut down? Was it taken spart and remade?

What about regiments where the waistcoat was a different colour to the coat?

Any information or details of illustrations gratefully received.

7. The Flags of Hessen-Kassel from the Editor.

Can anyone supply details of the flags carried by Hesten-Kassel units for use by my wargames units? (illustrations would be more than welcome!)

What was the 'National" ensign carried? Would regiments carry their colonel's emblem, or were there regimental colours? (A sample or two would not be turned away!)

8. Uniforms and Flags of the Jacobite Army in Ireland from Gareth Simon.

In the article above on the Irish-Jacobite Army mention is made of an attempt to uniform the "new" Irish regiments in a similar manner to the 'established' regiments. Can anyone tell me what the facing colours of the establishment regiments were, and also their cost colours where not red? Also information on their flags. Were they regimental flags, or did they change with their colonel? Come to that, who were their colonels? I would like to raise a wargame army of the Irish regiments, but I can't find much information.

9. Uniforms and Flags of the Hugenot Regiments in William III's Army from A Smothering (Anag.).

Accounts of William III's campaign in Ireland mention Hugenot regiments, who arc described as wearing grey coats. Can anyone supply any more information, such as facings, flags ctc? Also, were they in Dutch or English pay?

10. The Military Memoirs (1672-1713) of Captain George Carleton from the Editor (Again).

I have a copy of this book (Jonathan Cape, 1929. 1st edition, 1728), in which the editor states that there has been doubt cast on its authenticity, although he seems to think it reasonably sound. Has anyone come across this work before, and can anyone comment on its authenticity?
