Five years later the highlander looks very different. The coat is discarded and the soldier would be identified as a member of the 42nd only by the sett of his tartan - with its distinctive red overstripe and by the regimental lace on his waistcoat.

The plaid has been replaced by the much handier philabeg and his legs are covered to mid- thigh by a pair of blue wool mitasses.

Broadsword and pistol have both been left In store but otherwise he In In full marching order with the new knapsack.

This plate depicts a battalion company soldier of the 78th dressed as he would have been prior to embarkation for America and iAlustrating the regulation uniform orn by highland regiments.

The 42nd differed only in the addition of lace and different number of buttons on the coat.

Note how the belted plaid to fairly evenly pleated all the way round and the stockings are tied below the knee rather than below the *well of the calf.
