14th U.S. Infantry

Uniform Data

by Richard V. Barbuto

In October 1812, the men of the 14th were clothed in the white linen recruit uniform. It is very likely that they were in this uniform during Smyth’s two crossing attempts in November and December. Probably during that winter, wool uniforms arrived. The 14th was issued brown coats faced in red. Presumably, the regiment received at least one more uniform issue, very likely in the summer or fall of 1813.

No data is available but because of their location in New York, they possibly received an all gray wool uniform as blue was often reserved for the older regiments. Of course, officers purchased their own uniforms and these would have been blue coats faced and laced according to the current regulations.
