The saxon king comments after the battle:
“Too bad for me that I read the classics on ancient tactics. In fact I cannot read and I am only able to count 1,2,3 many. It was a christian priest, which sometimes entertains me by reading old scrolls during winter.
In one of his readings, he talked about a famous race called “Velitons”, which were bold enough to approach and disrupt the enemy lines by throwing javelins.
Some other race, called “Cretons” I think, did the same throwing arrows.
So I tried to teach my young men to do the same. I failed miserably and I should have noticed that these Velitons and Cretons are now extinct races…”
