Order Marking
in Shenandoah

Playing Aids

by David L. Hoover

After reading Mark Sarafin's interesting article "Order marking in Johnny Reb", Vol. VI, No. 3, I thought I would share two order sheets which I came up with for use with the Shenandoah Campaign System (SCS).

There are two forms: the unit log and the brigade log. Both forms are similar. The brigade form is, of course, for recording the status of the units within each brigade. The unit log is to record informadon on each unit within the brigade.

At this point, I need to make two things clear. First, we used Johnny Reb 2 which is a regimenta1 based rules set. Second, although SCS does not specifically prevent individual regiments from detaching from their brigades, we created a house rule which prevented units from detaching from a brigade with the exception of transferring units between brigades. Both brigades must spend an impulse in the same square without doing anything else to transfer units.

We quickly found the unit log to be redundant, so we used only the brigade log. I provided a sample of the unit log with the thought that those who play with a brigade based rules set may find some use for it. I shall, therefore, discuss only the brigade log in detail.

B<>Brigade Log

The top of the brigade log has information identifying the brigade and is self-explanatory. Below that are three charts. The upper chart, the turn chart, is a record of orders given to the brigade by each turn and impulse. (Remember we give orders to brigades only. Regiments can not detach, except to transfer to another brigade.) This came in handy in keeping track of fatigue, building, and resolving player disputes.

The next chart, the unit chart, consists of a list of each unit within the brigade and certain information on each of them: unit type, current strength, weapon type, current morale, detached or not, order of unit if detached (optional). The only information that would change during the campaign is current strength, current morale, detached and detached order.

The third chart, Battle Experience Points (BEP), is always current and is updated after each battle, and can, of course, go up, down or stay the same.

We played our first campaign using this form last year and found it to be a great aid and facilitator to play. I would be very interested to hear any comments or any other ideas for marking orders in SCS.

By the way, the "Shenandoah" logo on the forms was added by me, just for looks. I hope that's okay.
