Wargaming From Scotland

by Edward D. McKie

I have been wargaming since I was 12 years old, a total now of nearly 22 years (gulp!). The ACW has always been my main interest and I have a large collection of books (over 120) on the period. I constantly read and research the war almost obsessively!

At present I am a member of AYR Wargames Society. We have a membership of around 25. The ages of our members range from 16 to 50. All of the members have varied interest and we meet every Sunday from 11:30 AM 'till 4:30 PM in a small hall rented from the local council. Our club members have collected a vast number of figures from most periods. Napoleonics, Ancients, Fantasy and WWII being some of the most popular. I, too, have figures from most periods, however my collection of over 3,000 15mm ACW figures takes pride of place in my collection. Most club members paint their own figures. I find this to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the hobby.

Wargaming in Scotland is very fragmented. There are clubs throughout the country from Dunfries in the south to Aberdeen in the north. We rarely meet any of the other clubs except at CLAMORE, a one day convention put on by the Edinburgh based South East Scotland Club every August. This convention is always well attended by gamers and traders alike.

As a club we have recreated many large battles from a variety of periods. Using my own rules, we have successfully refought Gettysburg, Mine Run and the Seven Days campaign. Our large games are usually played over two days and often coincide with the visit of Sheffield Wargames Club with whom we are very friendly. The wargamers from Sheffield visit us annually in November. AYR Wargamers Society are reasonably well known in England as we have achieved a fourth place in the Sheffeld Triples and a fifth place in the World Ancient championships at Derby, for small club like ours with little experience of competitions this is a great achievement.

To sum up, wargaming in Scotland thrives! All the clubs have enthusiastic members who will ensure it continues to do so. I hope this small insight into Scottish wargaming proves of some interest.
